“Together For Tomorrow” Initiative

I’ve previously posted about the Obama Administration’s “Together For Tomorrow” initiative. Its initial announcement was very vaguely worded about a parent/community/school involvement program. Education Week published a few more details on the program recently, though it still seems a little unclear…I guess it’s an effort to support the development of community schools?

Parent Leadership Is Often “Missing Link” In Community Schools

I’m a big supporter of community schools — where schools provide many programs and services to students and the community beyond traditional classes — and have previously published many posts about them. The San Francisco Chronicle this morning published a front page story about a big community schools effort in Oakland. One issue, though, that […]

New Report On Community Schools

Lightening the Load: A Look at Four Ways that Community Schools Can Support Effective Teaching is a new report from The Center For American Progress. I’ve written a fair number of posts about community schools, which, simply speaking, are schools which provide a lot of community services to the broader community. I obviously think they […]

“High Performing Community Schools Receive National Awards for Excellence”

I’ve written in the past about “community schools,” which are schools that make a particular effort to connect with the surrounding community. Many, though not all, work with local parents and community members as partners in developing effective strategies (some of these schools, though well-intentioned, just decide to do programs on their own). Three schools […]

Community Schools In Oakland?

Oakland Schools Struggle, but Emeryville May Point a Way Up is the headline of a New York Times article today about an effort to connect schools with social service agencies. I’ve written about these kinds of projects — called Community Schools — previously. They certainly help. My concern, though, about many of them is that […]

“Providence’s Bailey Elementary School combines education, community outreach”

I’ve previously written several posts about community schools. Typically, community schools are ones that host multiple social services, as well as regular school classes. Some of them, but I suspect not most, work with parents to design and structure their efforts. But even if they’re done through the lens of looking at parents as “clients” […]

“Sebelius calls for schools to become community havens”

I’ve written posts about Community Schools and how they can help engage families. Typically, community schools are ones that host multiple social services, as well as regular school classes. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius was the keynote speaker this week at a Philadelphia conference calling for more Community Schools. Here are some […]
